NMITE Centre for Innovation and Future Skills, Hereford

Full electrical package for NMITE’s new Centre for Innovation and Future Skills at Blackfriars Campus, in the centre of Hereford. Built by Firth Construction and designed by Arbor Architects, funded through the Government’s Towns Fund as part of the Stronger Hereford programme, and opening this autumn.

The ceilings set the job. Exposed timber vaults with steel tie rods running through them, so there is no plasterboard to chase into and nowhere to hide a cable. Every pendant drop, every LED cove run following the line of the vault, and all the containment feeding them had to be set out and first fixed before the finishes went anywhere near it. There is no second attempt at that. Drill it afterwards and you have put a hole in a ceiling somebody spent months building.

We carried the electrical package for the building. All of the lighting, emergency lighting and small power was wired and installed by us. The fire alarm, CCTV, intruder alarm, disabled WC alarm and network cabling were delivered by specialist subcontractors working under our package, which meant NMITE and Firth Construction had one electrical contractor to deal with rather than four, and one set of certification at handover.

It is the kind of job the NICEIC Approved Contractor scheme exists for: a public building, a proper design team, and paperwork that gets checked.
