This Hager board replaced an old unit in a Hereford home. Separate RCBO protection on every circuit means the freezer stays on when the shower circuit trips, and the labelling means the next electrician (or you, at 10pm) can see exactly what is what.
Fuseboard, fuse box or consumer unit?
All the same thing: the box where every circuit in the house starts. Electricians say consumer unit, most people say fuseboard, and an old one with pull-out fuses is a fuse box. Whatever you call yours, a photo of it on WhatsApp tells us most of what we need.
Since 2016 the regulations have required new consumer units in homes to be housed in a non-combustible enclosure, which in practice means metal. A plastic board is not illegal to keep, but it is one of the things that dates an installation.
Why an RCBO on every circuit
A lot of older boards, and plenty of newer split-load ones, put several circuits behind one shared RCD. One fault on the outside socket and half the house goes dark, freezer included, often at night.
We fit a separate RCBO to every circuit. A fault trips the one circuit it is on, and everything else stays on. It also makes faults quicker to find, because the board tells you which circuit it is.
Replace it, or test it first?
Age alone does not condemn a board. If yours is not giving trouble and you just want to know where you stand, an EICR from £250 tests every circuit and tells you whether the board, and the wiring behind it, actually needs work.
The time it usually has to go is when you add something big. An EV charger, solar panels, a garden room or a hot tub each need their own protected circuit, and a full or dated board often cannot take one. Planning the board alongside the job saves paying for two visits.

Questions we get asked
How do I know if my fuseboard needs upgrading?
Wooden backing, rewireable fuses with coloured dots, no test button, or a board that has had extras bolted on over the years: any of those and it is worth a look. WhatsApp us a photo and we'll tell you honestly. If it is safe, we say so.
How long does the swap take?
Most straight swaps are done in a day, and the power is only off for part of it. Testing every circuit afterwards is what takes the time, and it is not optional: that is what the certificate certifies.
Will you find problems once the old board is off?
Sometimes, and we quote before touching anything extra. Occasionally an old installation needs remedial work before a modern board will hold in, which is a good thing to discover on our test equipment rather than during a fault.
